Sabaidee!, Welcome to Vientiane! Upon arrival in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, you will be met and welcomed by a local guide expert. Privately transferred to hotel in the city centre. Checking into your accommodation and you will spend your evening at leisure. Overnight at hotel.
Vientiane is located on the Mekong River. It is Laos' capital and, with a population of 600,000, the country's largest city. Despite some new developments, Vientiane retains an 'old world' feel unlike other Asian cities. Today you will take a very comprehensive city sightseeing with your private tour guide. Starting at 8:30am, join a tour that will take in the city's intriguing main sights. You will visit the morning market, Talat Sao, where you will see silk and cotton textiles, gold and silver jewellery, and wooden carvings. Next, visit exquisite Wat Sisaket, Vientiane's oldest original temple, which dates from 1818 ; all the other temples in Vientiane were re-built after the Siamese invasion of 1828. Across the street, Haw Pha Kaew, the former royal temple of the Lao Monarchy, has now been converted into an interesting museum.
Finally, finish your day's touring with a stop at Phra That Luang, the most important national monument in Laos and symbolic of both the monarchy and the Buddhist religion, and the Patuxai Monument, which is strongly reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Breakfast at hotel and followed by a private transfer to the airport to take a morning flight to Pakse. Upon arrival into Pakse you will be met and welcomed by a local tour expert, privately transferred to the jetty for the start of your first day of your cruise on the the Wat Phou Rice Barge. The highlight of the afternoon is the Vat Phou ruins, a UNESCO Heritage site – the majestic pre-Angkorian 10th century temple complex and our boat’s namesake. You have time to visit the museum at the ruins site, walk up to the highest temple and take as many photos as you would like. As dusk falls, we transfer you back to the Vat Phou boat for a chance to enjoy the tropical sunset on the deck. Dinner is served on board, while the boat docks for the night alongside a remote Laotian village.
Breakfast is on board as we set sail for the village of Tomo. This is a small village a few minutes walk away from the mysterious hidden forest temple of Oum Muong. Afterwards we rejoin the boat to continue our cruise southwards. Lunch is on the deck, while we leisurely sail closer to the wild paradise known as the 4,000 Islands All meals are included on the Vat Phou Mekong cruise and the galley produces the finest of Laotian, Vietnamese and Thai dishes, lovingly prepared and beautifully presented. Late afternoon we disembark from the boat to walk through Ban Deua Tia, a small Laotian Village where the traditional way of life has not changed in centuries, you will also visit the local school and share some time with the students. Our day’s cruise finishes at the most northern tip of Don Khong, the largest inhabited island in the river archipelago. After dinner, the evening is yours to relax and enjoy.
Your final day onboard the Wat Phou Rice Barge starts with a visit to Don Khone Island, an old port established by French colonists. Time permitting you will then visit the impressive waterfalls of Khong Pha Peng, before transferring back to Pakse in time for your onward flight. On arrival into Luang Prabang you will be met and transferred to your hotel, with the evening at leisure to enjoy a good meal in the old capital.
For early risers, you'll enjoy a special dawn visit to watch the ceremony of monks collecting the alms. As the sun rises, long lines of orange-robed monks walk barefoot through the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents. Afterwards you’ll return to the hotel for breakfast.
Relax for a while after breakfast and today is spent with a comprehensive city orientation. Start at the former Royal Palace. You’ll then continue on foot to visit Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief, and Wat Sensoukarahm, which features a dazzling golden façade. The morning tour ends at Wat Xieng Thong. Return to your hotel to have a lunch break.
At 16:30, you will also participating another special ritual ceremony, the Baci Ceremony. As evening falls, you’ll have the rare opportunity to witness one of Laos’s oldest traditions, the baci. A ritual based on mixed animist and Buddhist beliefs, the baci is performed to call back escaped spirits to the body. The Lao people believe this is an important ritual to hold before major life events, such as births, weddings and long-distance travels, as well as for proper greetings and farewells. Breakfast at hotel and today is a special day as you will experience an ethical elephant sanctuary and considered as one of the best places to visit in Luang Prabang. The sanctuary is situated in the 500-acre property is located about 30 minutes away from Luang Prabang’s Old Town, and is an ideal home for its elephants to roam free – unchained. No bull hooks, no riding, no chaining. With the guidance of their mahouts who use verbal commands, the elephants socialize in their natural groups, play and bathe in the river and eat plenty of bananas and corn supplied from the villages nearby. This half day tour is a golden chance for you to interact responsibly with the resident elephants, and while the elephants may not be able to roam the wild again they are given every opportunity to perform their natural behaviors. On this experience, you will also enjoy 2-hour trek and it will take you through beautiful Lao jungle, past traditional Lao farms, and past the cool Huay Nok stream, where you may experience elephants playing joyfully in the water. As you walk alongside the elephants on a small dirt path listening to their gentle footsteps and the sounds of the jungle around you, you will experience a profound sense of understanding, respect, and caring for these amazing animals. Following lunch you will take the short ride back into Luang Prabang.
Ock Pop Tock
On the way back, you will stop to visit to the Ock Pop Tock, a non-profit organization that aims to preserve traditional weaving techniques. Weaving was once a prevalent skill that provided a significant source of income to many Lao families, but today it is in decline due to the evolution of modern technology. On a short tour, you’ll learn the process of silk weaving, from dyeing to the final stages of loom weaving. For your final stop of the day, we’ll ride back to town along the Mekong to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre. Dedicated to the rich diversity and culture of the ethnic minorities of Laos, the center displays traditional costumes, tools and artifacts alongside fascinating written histories.
On the last day of your Luang Prabang tour, your morning will be free for some last-minute sightseeing or shopping before you are privately transferred to the airport to catch your scheduled outbound flight to next destination.
